  1. What's in the Demo?
A lot! The demo contains the animated tutorials and a complete level called Revolution. It is an early level in the Imperial Campaign path - in which Artos has been ship-wrecked on the rocky coast of Cravant, once his father's kingdom - only Artos and a few of his men have made it to shore, they must now begin securing a base from which to reclaim the rest of the map and his father's former lands.....
  2. What's not in the Demo?
A huge amount!! Revolution is only one of the 22 levels contained in the full game. Also the demo does not allow multiplayer and online play, which are available in the full game.
  3. Getting Started

It is strongly recommended that you play through the animated Tutorials. Whether you're an experienced RTS gamer or a novice - the Tutorial quickly teaches you the basics of the game.

Once you have completed the Tutorial you may start the demo level - 'Revolution'.

  4. Technical Support

Technical support is not provided for the Warrior Kings demo.

To remove all of the saved games and other preferences, delete the folder called 'Black Cactus' located inside your computer's 'Preferences' folder.

  8. Missing Extensions

Warrior Kings requires CarbonLib 1.4 or later to be installed in your computer's system folder. If this extension is not present Warrior Kings Demo will fail to launch and you will see a dialog explaining why. This problem is most likely to affect you if your computer is running Mac OS 9.1.

You can get the latest version of CarbonLib from Apple by using Software Update or downloading it from http://www.apple.com/updates.

  9. Video drivers

If you are experiencing video problems with Warrior Kings, then the most likely cause is outdated video drivers.

If your Macintosh computer came fitted with a video card, which you have not changed or upgraded, then you will find the latest drivers on Apple's website at http://www.apple.com/support

The latest drivers for ATi cards are available at their website:http://www.ati.com

The latest drivers for nVidia cards are available via software update.

Also check that you have the latest version of OpenGL. You can download this from http://www.apple.com/updates

  10. Performance issues

The most important factors in determining how smoothly Warrior Kings plays are your CPU speed, the amount of built-in RAM in your computer and the in game settings you select.

Warrior Kings is playable with the minimum specifications listed above, but it is memory hungry and plays more smoothly on faster computers with more RAM. However, if you are dissatisfied with the performance of the game on your computer there are several things you can do to that are likely to improve performance:

(Points 1, 2 and 3 below are only relevant if your computer is running MacOS 9)

    1. Increase virtual memory: you must ENABLE virtual memory if your computer has 128 MB of RAM or less. If you don't know what virtual memory is, that's ok - it's on by default, but some users manually disable it. A good setting is twice the amount of installed physical RAM, but make sure it is at least 300 MB. To do this, open the 'Memory' control panel, turn virtual memory on, and set the box on the right to at least 300 MB (preferably more). Now restart your machine.
    2. Turn off all unnecessary extensions. Having lots of extensions running on your system is a burden on its processing. Before launching Warrior Kings reduce the number of extensions your system is using. This is most easily done by selecting the 'base set' of extensions. From the Extensions Manager Control Panel choose the base extensions set in the selected set drop down menu. Now restart your computer.
    3. Make sure File Sharing is turned off.
    4. Close all other applications: You are strongly encouraged to quit all other applications before launching Warrior Kings - other applications will drain resources and slow the overall system down.
    5. Clear disk space: Ensure that your main hard-disk has a lot of spare disk space.

In addition to these general Mac actions there are some specific in-game settings you can select, which will help speed things up.

    • If you have an older, graphics card with limited VRAM (say less than 16 MB) try lowering the graphics quality. In the Graphics Setup dialog drag the "Performance vs Quality" slider to the left. This reduces the resolution and texture detail, which are the two factors that have the biggest impact on older graphics cards.
    • For older machines with slower CPUs, it is helpful to adjust the Advanced settings. You can turn them all off if you want the absolute minimum, but "Character Shadows", "Building Shadows", "Detailed Landscape", and "High Quality Animations" are probably the most significant in terms of processing requirements. Turning these items off should speed up the game.
